Joyce was born April 21, 1935, in Sweet Grass, Montana (across the border from Coutts, Alberta) to Earl R Best and Ida Belle Constable. She grew up in Cut Bank, Montana area and Coutts, Alberta. She married Duane Hartl on December 29, 1953, in Cut Bank where Duane was stationed at the Air Force station. They lived in the Chicago area and then relocated to Spearfish for Duane to get his Business Teaching Degree with help using the GI bill. They moved to Sundance in 1957 with their two young boys and Duane began teaching. In the summers after their daughter was born, they lived in Laramie so Duane could work on his master's degree. Joyce worked for the US Post office for 21 years. She loved spending time with her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids and enjoyed many adventures with them including hunting and fishing trips to many non-exotic places for varying lengths of time. That is, she never knew when we might show up at the house or where we might end up on these adventures. She enjoyed cross stitching, playing bridge and pinochle and belonged to the American Legion and Altar and Rosary at St Paul's Catholic Church.

Survivors are her sister Audrey Johnson Nevins; her children Joseph (Sallie) Hartl, Stephen Hartl and Pamela (Gerry) Granahan; eight grandchildren:  Stephanie, Drew, Tim, Kody, Kelly, Trevor, Tyler and Erin; eight great-grandchildren  Peyton, Kaidence,  Gavin, Jakob, Andrew, Aiden, Eloise and Norah and many nieces and nephews. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Duane Hartl, brother J Duane Best, her sisters Lorene(Jane) Darner and Anita Powers and several other special relatives.

Arrangements are under the care of Fidler-Roberts & Isburg Funeral Chapel of Sundance. Online condolences may be written at www.fidler-isburgfuneralchapels.com
