Winnifred Rosamond Shama, a lifelong resident of Deadwood, South Dakota, passed away peacefully at Clarkson Healthcare in Rapid City on June 7, 2026, going to rest with the Lord at the age of 101. Born on March 7, 1925, she witnessed a century of history, anchoring the Black Hills community with her enduring work ethic, sharp leadership, and vibrant social spirit. Everyone who met Winnie saw how she was a shining example of motherhood, a devoted wife, grandmother, and a trailblazing businesswoman.
A true force in local business and community development, Winnie and her husband, Philip, physically helped build the region. Together, they established the Lariat Motel in Deadwood and developed four trailer courts in the historic mining town of Lead, providing essential housing and hospitality during the area's booming eras.
Winnie was a vibrant and driving force in civic life, dedicating her time to the preservation, growth, and heritage of her beloved hometown. She served as an active member of the Society of Black Hills Pioneers, South Dakota Tourism, Deadwood You Bet, and the Black Hills Business Women. Her deep faith and community ties also shone through her dedicated participation in the Catholic Altar Society, the Eagles Lodge, and the Elks Lodge.
Winnie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Philip Shama; her three dear sons, Michael, Timothy, and Tommy Shama; her brothers, Wayne and Wesley Clingman; her sisters, Betty Baker and Marjorie Richards; and her grandson, Timothy Shama, Jr.
Her love and legacy will be carried on and cherished by her surviving sister, Berniece Schuster, and her children, Philip Shama Jr., Sandra Johnson (Steve), Robert Shama (Kathy), Susan Caldwell, and Eddie Shama (Jennifer). She is also deeply missed by her 18 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral Mass to celebrate Winnifred’s extraordinary life will be held on Monday, June 15th at 10:30 a.m. at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Deadwood. A luncheon will immediately follow the service at the church. Interment will take place at 2:30 p.m. at the Black Hills National Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest with her husband.
