Obituary

William (Bill) Alexander Scobee, 86, of Spearfish, passed on from this life on September 27, 2011, at David M. Doresett Healthcare Center in Spearfish.

Memorial Services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday, October 7, 2011, at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel with Chaplain Charles Conger officiating. A Celebration of Life will be that afternoon from 1:00 – 3:00 P.M. at Hudson Hall.

Bill was born January 9, 1925, in Humboldt, Kansas, to George and Flossie (Faulkner) Scobee. In 1930, he moved with his family from Kansas to Wyoming where they homesteaded near Verse, WY and Bill began his education. In 1935, the family moved to Sheridan, WY. Bill went to school in the 5th and 6th grade at Home Ranch School west of Sheridan. Bill would set muskrat traps and skin them after school and sell the skins in Sheridan. From there Bill moved with his family to Soldier Creek, north of Sheridan and went to 7th and 8thgrade at Soldier Creek School. He would trap skunks and sell their hides for spending money. At 14, Bill took a job working for the PK Ranch.

In January, 1943, Bill joined the United States Navy, where he served in the South Pacific on the USS Andromeda during World War II. After 2 years and 11 days they headed back to San Francisco where Bill was Honorably Discharged.

Bill worked for the Brown Kennedy Cattle Co. trailing cattle from Powder River. He also broke horses and helped with the branding, weaning and roundups. Almost every spring, he would quit his ranch work and shear sheep, where he could make as much in 1 month as 3 months on a ranch. He also worked construction in the Big Horn Mountains building roads.

The summer of 1947, Bill met Lorraine Vinke at a roller skating rink in Sheridan. They married in June of 1948. Bill worked as a ranch hand in Montana until they moved to Big Horn, Wyoming where they raised their 5 children, Sandra, Janice, Gail, Daryl, and Linda. In 1967, the family relocated to Spearfish where they have lived since. Bill retired from Pope and Talbot Sawmill as foreman in 1990.

Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, golfing, wood work and jewelry making. When asked what his greatest accomplishment was and what he was most proud of, his answer was "my family". His quick, humorous answers would always make us laugh and bring a smile to Bill's face.

Bill will be dearly missed by his 3 daughters, Sandra Mapp (Roy), Highland Ranch, CO, Janice Vaplon (Dan), Spearfish, SD, Gail Reutter, Kadoka, SD and 1 son, Daryl Scobee (Pam), Sidney, MT. and a brother, Henry Scobee (Loretta), Ranchester, WY, 13 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine, in June, 2011, his parents, 1 brother, Clarence, 2 sisters, Rose (Babe), and Georgia (Sis), and his daughter, Linda Henry.

We love you Daddy and Momma!!!
