Obituary

William "Bill" Stott, 76, Deadwood, SD was born in Mobridge, SD to William and Tillie Stott on June 14, 1946 and went to his heavenly reward on April 21, 2023 in Deadwood, SD after a 2 1/2 battle with cancer.

The family moved to Deadwood in 1953, where Bill spent the rest of his life. Bill started working at an early age for Goldberg's Grocery.

Bill had a yearn for learning, he was an avid reader. Bill attended BHSU and graduated with a degree in Political Science, followed by a degree in Criminal Justice and obtained a paralegal certification.

He was a deputy for Richard McGrath during the 1973 Custer Courthouse uprising and was a Reserve Officer for many years in Deadwood.

During all this time, Bill began a life-long career at Homestake Gold Mine. He worked himself up from a miner to shaft supervisor. He took his job seriously and shut the mine down for a week, when his concerns about frayed cables were ignored. After that, he could go to the Homestake manager's office without an appointment to discuss his concerns with his job as the shaft supervisor. Safety always came first with him.

After the mine closed down, Bill worked as a supervisor for SCI in Rapid City. He was well-liked and respected by his staff. Bill worked at the Gold Dust and the Mountain Grand as a security officer, monitoring videos throughout the casino. He was a consultant for the Sanford Lab when they began operation. When the mine was closing and they were discarding the information books of the mine, Bill asked if he could have them. Those books were vital information that the Sanford Lab needed. Bill was glad to share the information without having to be compensated.

After he retired, you would see Bill walking through the casinos just to see who was out and about and would stop to visit with those he knew.

Bill was proud of achieving a Black Belt in Kung Fu. He said he enjoyed the training he took and the fun of going through different moves with classmates and friends.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Barbara and his sons, Brent and Bryce. His 3 sisters, Ruby Douglas, Mary (Lou) Leahy, and Delores (Ron) Holso. His in-laws Bob and Marva Ryther, Donna Steckman, Verdeen Davies, Harley Willuweit, many cousins, nieces and nephews, his Aunt Irene Hirsch Stone and his uncle, David Zulauf.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, brother-in-law Jerry Douglas, brother-in-law Donnie Willuweit (who was more of a brother and friend) and many of Barb's siblings and in-laws, and many of his aunts and uncles.

A memorial has been established to benefit the Black Hills Mining Museum in Lead.
