William "Bill" Millard, 78 of Lead, SD passed away Saturday, April 3, 2010 at Mountain Vista Medical Hospital in Mesa Arizona.
Memorial services will be held at 1:30 P.M., Friday, April 9, 2010 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Lead with Pastor Bruce Adams officiating.
Bill was born to Archie and Francis (Wescott) Millard in Yankton, SD on November 2, 1931. He is survived by his wife, Shirley (Aby) with whom he shared 58 happy years.
This union produced six children; William "Gene" Millard and wife Bridgette, Neil Millard and wife Betty, Raymond Millard and friend Roxanne, Sue Bidwell, Lou Ann Brien and husband Leonard and Jeff Millard and friend Patti. He was blessed with 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Brothers; Alvin of rural Blunt, SD, Jim of rural Shepherd, MT and one sister-in-law Cora Jean of Presho, SD as well as numerous nephews and nieces also survive Bill.
Bill received his early education at Springdale Country school and working on the farm, from there he went on to high school in Blunt SD. After school he worked for the Chicago-Northwestern and continued with family farming. In 1956 he moved his family to Lead SD to work for Homestake Mining Company for the winter. That winter was very long as he retired from the mine in October of 1991.
He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist church in Lead, Black Hills Rod and Gun club and he served many years as an officer on the Lead Police Reserve. Bill was an avid hunter of pheasant and deer and enjoyed fishing and camping. His favorite hobby was woodworking, this talent turned into a retirement small business that kept him very busy.
Bill enjoyed being one of the snowbirds in Apache Junction, AZ where he spent days in his engineering chair and evenings playing cards.
