William P. "Bill" McGrath, 91, of Spearfish passed away on Wednesday April 9, 2014 at Spearfish Regional Hospital.
William Peter McGrath was born on March 19, 1923 in Lead, SD to John and Margaret McGrath. He attended St. Patrick's Catholic School through the 8 th grade, and then graduated from Lead High School in 1941. Bill attended the University of Montana, and then transferred to the University of Michigan where he earned a degree in Forestry.
While in college, Bill enlisted in the Marine Reserve. In 1950, he married Patricia Louise Allen before becoming active military at the start of the Korean Conflict. After returning from Korea, Bill worked for a short time for the US Forest Service and as a jailer for Lawrence County. In 1954, they moved to Spearfish where he became employed with Homestake Sawmill as a forester, and then General Manager. He continued to work for Homestake Mining Company in various positions until his retirement in 1985.
Bill and Pat continued to live in Spearfish where they raised their family. Bill was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and was involved with the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Keep South Dakota Green Association and ROMEO's.
Surviving is his daughter Ellie Litschewski of Rapid City; three sons, Bill (Sue) McGrath of Spearfish, Mik e McGrath of Rapid City and Tim (LeAnn) McGrath of Ankeny, IA; his brother Hubert McGrath of Lead; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Pat, his parents, ten sisters, two brothers and his grandson Paul Litschewski.
Visitation with will be from 4-6 P.M. on Sunday, April 13, 2014 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish. Vigil service will be at 7:30 P.M. on Sunday, at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 A.M. Monday, April 14, 2014 at the church with burial to follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the Spearfish Honor Guard. A memorial has been established to St. Joseph's Catholic Church.
Arrangements are under the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapels and Crematory Service of Spearfish.
