William "Bill" Barnes, 85, Spearfish, SD died Thursday, February 28, 2013 at Spearfish Regional Hospital.
Bill was born January 6, 1928 to L.O. "Barney" and Edith (Jensen) Barnes at Lakefield MN. He spent his early years in the Lakefield area, moving to Faith at the age of 15. His family then moved to Mobridge, where he attended school. He quit high school and went to work for the railroad. He was then recruited into the U.S. Army, serving in Japan during the occupation. After his time in the service he returned to Mobridge, where he met and married Violet Huber on August 6, 1950. They lived in Mobridge, Dupree and then in Fort Pierre, where they raised their family. He owned a trucking company and worked at the Fort Pierre and Highmore Livestock Auctions. Being a self-taught auctioneer, he then moved to Belle Fourche, where he worked at the Belle Fourche and St. Onge Livestock Auctions and the Bowman Livestock Auction. He then retired in 2008. Bill and Violet also enjoyed wintering in Arizona for 25 years.
Bill is survived by his wife of 62 years, Violet, Spearfish; children, Debbie (Bill) Myers, St. Onge, Rhonda (Terry) Lawhon, Garden City, KS, Billie Curtis, Belle Fourche, Sherri Stoeser, Pierre, Barney Barnes, Newell; 14 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren and five sisters. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.
Visitation for Bill will be 5-7 PM, Monday, March 4, 2013 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish, followed by a 7 PM prayer service. Funeral Services will be at 11:00 am, Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at the United Church of Christ in Belle Fourche, with Reverend Del Neumeister officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. A memorial has been established to the Belle Fourche High School Rodeo Club or the Belle Fourche United Church of Christ.
