Walter Phillip Stumpf, 87 of Nisland went to heaven on Saturday, July 17, 2010 at his home surrounded by his beloved family.
Visitation will be from 5-7 P.M., Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, July 22, 2010 at St. James's Lutheran Church in Belle Fourch with Pastor Karen Matuska officiating. Burial will take place at Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish. In lieu of flowers memorials have been established to St. James Lutheran Church and Northern Hills Hospice.
Walter was born on November 12, 1922 in Proctor, CO to John and Christina (Kinzel) Stumpf. He attended rural schools in Spearfish, SD, and graduated from Spearfish High School in 1941. He married Louise Jeffery on November 24, 1942. He farmed the Shuft place in Spearfish before he and Louise bought their farm in Arpan. Walter and Louise have made their home and raised their family on the Arpan farm for 65 years.
Walter loved working on his farm. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a Director for the Belle Fourche Irrigation District, for which he was honored for 18 years of service. He also served as a school board member, a 4-H leader, and a member of St. James Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Louise Stumpf, of Nisland; daughters Walterley (Stan) Jackson, of El Paso, TX, and Janet Boettger, of Loveland, CO; son Larry (Gerry) Stumpf, of Nisland; brother Murphy (Carol) Stumpf, of Chula Vista, CA; 9 grandchildren, Jody (Peter) Balleninger, of Acushnet, MA, Michael (Crystal) Hardesty, of Sherwood, OR, Brad (Stutee) Hardesty, of Dallas, TX, Scott Hardesty, Spearfish, Arron (Rita) Hardesty, of El Paso, TX, Jason Boettger, of Ft. Collins, CO, Jeremy (Kelly) Boettger, of Loveland, CO, Edward (Michelle) Stumpf, of Spearfish, Steven (Rachel) Stumpf, of Gillette, WY and 9 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters; 3 brothers and 2 nephews.
