Virlene Lillian Wiswell, 91, of Deadwood, SD, died September 19, 2011 at Spearfish Regional Hospital, Spearfish, SD.
Virlene was born April 4, 1920 to Harry and Anna (Mumm) Eickmann on the family farm in Republic County, KS. She attended eight years at Republic County School and four years of high school at Chester, NE, graduating in 1937. In 1939, she began working for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in Bridgeport, NE, transferring to offices in Alliance, NE, Rapid City and Deadwood, working for over 39 years with them. Virlene was married to Walter Wiswell June 9, 1947 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Deadwood.
Virlene served as a church lector and Eucharistic minister at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Deadwood. She was also a member of the St. Ambrose Altar Society, Telephone Pioneers of America, Beta Sigma Phi, Zonta and Blue Bell Council. Virlene loved to take hikes and walks, crochet and cook.
Virlene is survived by her beloved husband, Walter Wiswell and her nieces and nephews; Phyllis (Gerald) Pokorney of Deadwood, John Iverson of Belle Fourche, Walter Howard (Sue) Iverson of Colorado, Francis (Eileen) Iverson of Deadwood, Virlene (Don) Oxford of Lead, Paul Iverson of Lead, Janet (Ron) Nelson of Montana and Charlene of Arkansas
She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Delores Kesler and Ardis Richards and brother Reed Eickmann.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00A.M., Thursday, September 22, 2011 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Deadwood, burial will follow at Oakridge Cemetery, Deadwood, SD. A rosary will be said at 9:15A.M. prior to the mass at the church.
