Viola J. Westrum, 99 of Spearfish passed away Thursday, February 22, 2024.
Viola was born October 29, 1924, to John and Selma (Anderson) Halvorson at Heimdal, North Dakota. Vi passed February 22, 2024, at Spearfish, South Dakota.
Vi grew up on the family farm near Heimdal. She later moved to Spearfish with her family. During WW II she went to Seattle, Washington and worked at the Boeing Aircraft Defense Plant and the Kenworth Manufacturing Co. She married Victor Westrum on January 2, 1946, at Deadwood, SD. They had one son, Paul. She and Vic made their home in Kalispell, MT, Seattle and then moved back to Spearfish.
She and Vic were among the first residents at Edgewood Vista in Spearfish. Vi loved to walk and she could be seen all over the town walking her poodle, Buster. She also loved music and played the accordion. Vi worked in the Registrar's Office at Black Hills State University. She and Vic also cleaned businesses and their church.
She was preceded in death by her husband Vic, son Paul, brothers Oscar and Rudy Halvorson, sisters Lillian Lorenzo, Gladys Massey and Marian Halvorson. She is survived by her grandson Eric Westrum of Calgary, Canada, granddaughter Krista Kelly of Kennewick, WA and three great grandchildren Jackson, Cason and Samuel Kelly. She is also survived by special friend and caregiver Penny Roberts of Spearfish.
Graveside services will be held at the Black Hills National Cemetery on Friday, March 8th at 11:00 a.m. After the committal, lunch will be served at Our Savior's Lutheran Church where Vi was a longtime member. Memorials may be directed to Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 1020 State St. Spearfish, SD 57783.
