Victor J. Young, 96, of Spearfish, SD, died October 29th 2007. He was born October 17th 1911 at Malcolm, NE. He graduated from St John's Academy and Junior College in Winfield, KS, in 1929, then attended Lutheran Seminaries in St. Louis, MO, and Milwaukee, WI, from 1929 to 1933.
He and Dorothy C. Berg of Racine, WI, married on June 23rd 1934 and served as pastor in Goehner, Gurley and Potter, NE until 1944 when he left the ministry to work in the defense industry in Racine, WI.
In 1949 he moved to Pierre, SD, and founded Western States Wholesale which later merged with Mass Merchandisers of Harrison, AR, and later with McKesson Corp of San Francisco, CA.
Later in life he was instrumental in founding the American State Bank of Pierre, SD, and served as its first chairman of the board.
Two memories of his community life that he enjoyed recalling were his efforts on behalf of a municipal golf course in Pierre, even though he did not golf himself. The other was his several appearances in front of the Banking Commission to found his bank and in front of the Highway Commission seeking a link to the interstate system for Pierre.
He was blessed with three sons, Peter and Thomas who preceded him in death and Andrew and his wife Constance who live in Spearfish, SD. He is also survived by his brother Lester Jung of San Antonio, TX, grandchildren, Tiffany Smith of Sturgis, SD, Victoria Burns of Fuquay-Varina, NC, Thomas Young of Asheboro, NC, Dorothy St.Cyr of Amherst, NH, Matthew Young of Pittsboro, NC, Valori Brusseau of Pierre, SD, Timothy Young of Loveland, CO, and Jason Young of Colorado Springs, CO, and 15 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Young.
Visitation will be from 5:00PM until 7:00PM at Isburg Funeral Chapel in Pierre, on Friday, November 2nd 2007.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30AM on Saturday, November 3rd 2007 at Faith Lutheran Church in Pierre, with Pastor Brad Urbach and Pastor Levi Willms officiating, burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery. A memorial will be established.
