IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Vernon
Sailer
June 6, 1930 – June 22, 2024
His life journey was long and very worthy of celebrating along the way, but that journey has now ended, and he is at peace. Vernon John Sailer, 94, of Spearfish, SD (formerly from Deadwood), passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 22, 2024, at Edgewood Vista in Spearfish.
Vernon was born June 7, 1930, at Krem, ND (near Hazen), son of George H. and Martha (Pempeit) Sailer. He served in the US Marine Corp in his early 20s. This led him on a tour of Duty on the Korean Peninsula during the Korean War. He was always proud to tell anyone who would listen that when he was in California for Basic Training the new paper interviewed him about 'being a Sailer in the Marine Corp'. He was proud of his time in the service and quite frequently the older he was, would sing the Marines' Hymn
He was joined in marriage to Telitha 'Peggy' Mason on December 23, 1954, at the St. John Lutheran Church in Dickinson, ND. They had lived in Sioux Falls, Blunt, and Ft. Pierre before settling in Deadwood until moving into Edgewood Vista, Assisted Living in Spearfish, SD.
Vern attended trade school in Wahpeton, ND and became a Sheet Metal Journeyman Fabricator, which led to his long prosperous career. He worked for Allen Lewis upon moving to Deadwood; then started a business of his own with a partner – Sailer and Larvie Sheet Metal, Plumbing, and Roofing; then leading to his job with Wolff's Plumbing and Heating before his retirement.
Vern is survived by his children, son Douglas (Polly) Sailer of Deadwood; daughter Rita (Marc) Stacey of Spearfish; grandchildren Danny Sailer of Laramie, WY; Shannon (Shandie) Sailer of Laramie, WY; Trevor (Ashlynn) Stacey of Rapid City; Nathan (Bailey) Stacey of Spearfish; Andrew (Katie) Stacey of Spearfish; great-grandchildren, Marek, Madison and Aryia Sailer, Laramie WY and Payton Stacey and soon to be baby boy Stacey of Rapid City; brother, Roland (Joyce) Sailer of Rapid City; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Telitha (Peggy); son, Lindsey; parents; siblings, Walter, Lawrence, Gerhard (Gary), Velma, Veona, Arnold, Martin, Leila, Gerald (Jerry), Delbert and 2 infants.
Funeral services will be held on July 2, 2024, at 10:00 am, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Spearfish. Vernon will be laid to rest at Black Hills National Cemetery at 1:30 pm with full military honors following a luncheon at the church.
