Vern, the youngest of seven children, was born to William and Emma Backens, on April 3, 1931, in Wecota, South Dakota. He lived most of his life in the Spearfish area. In addition to teaching, Vern owned and operated a ranch where he raised Red Angus cattle. For over 60 years, he was an active member of Saint Paul's Lutheran of Spearfish where he faithfully served in several roles, including teaching a popular Bible class.

Vern is survived by his wife, of seventy-two years, Carol and three adult children, Dan Backens (Rhonda), Susan Weaver (Lloyd), and Mark Backens (Fariba). He is also survived by his sister Doris Mansfield, nine grandchildren, and nineteen great-grandchildren.

Aside from his love of teaching and ranching, Vern and Carol loved to travel. He also was passionate about being a grandpa and great grandpa. He will be forever remembered for his generosity, enthusiasm, and faith.
