Verlyn E. (Henning) Crisp, 96 of Spearfish passed away Thursday, August 12, 2010 at Spearfish Regional Hospital.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish. Inurnment will take place at Hills of Rest Cemetery in Sioux Falls, SD.
Verlyn was born on her parents homestead, July 23, 1914 at Ekalaka, Montana. At age six, her parents moved to Sioux Falls, SD where she attended grammar school at West Sioux and Emerson Elementary. She graduated from Washington High School. On May 29, 1933, she married Henry Henning of Sioux Falls. The couple had one son, Grant. Verlyn worked for the Volunteers of America for several years collecting donations for the organizations, while traveling much of North Dakota and South Dakota. She also worked as a retail clerk. In 1959, they bought the Ben Franklin variety store in Lake Andes, SD. In 1972, Henry Henning died. Verlyn continued to manage the store until 1976. In that year, she married Henry Crisp of Lake Andes. Upon the death of her second husband she moved to Spearfish in 1987, to be near her son and family.
Verlyn enjoyed crocheting, reading newspapers and discussing politics and business with friends.
Her parents preceded her in death as did her first and second husbands.
She is succeeded by her son, Grant Henning and his wife Ann of Spearfish; two granddaughters, Sara (Eric) Sorenson of U.S. Embassy, Seoul, Korea and VA and Beth (Nathan) Hermanson of Spearfish, two great-grandchildren, Caitlin and Natalie Hermanson,sister, Beverly (Robert) Shakstad of Edwardsville, IL and two nieces, Susan (Robert) Pederson of Edwardsville, IL and Penne (Robert) Layher of St. Charles, MO.
