After years in California, Oregon, and Alaska, Thayne returned to Underwood, Minnesota. He married Denise Brown of Minneapolis in 1983. Soon after, Thayne designed and built his family's A-frame home on Bass Lake. His daughters, Sarah and Simone, were born in 1986 and 1989.
