Sylvia Laverne Draine, 87 of Sundance, WY passed away on Friday, September 16, 2011 at Sundance Assisted Care in Sundance.

Sylvia was born April 22, 1924 in White River, SD to James and Ritta (Horton) Draine. She attended school in Wood, SD and later went to college for two years at Black Hills Teachers College. She obtained a teaching certificate enabling her to teach in country schools. She taught school at several rural schools in Mellette County, SD including Cody, Palek, and Mitchell schools. She would either board with different families in the district or live in the teacherage. She also cared for her mother and kept house for her father at different times over the years. Her five nephews and nieces each had the privilege of being taught by her at different times in their lives. After her mother passed she returned to college and got a bachelors degree. She began teaching in the Sundance, WY school system in the early 1960s and retired from there. She loved books and music. She was an amateur painter and loved to garden. She was a fun and loving person to know and will be missed by many.

She is survived by one nephew, Francis 'Pete' Petera of Dubois, WY and one niece, Marie Petera Vetsch of Spokane, WA and many great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Ritta Draine; two brothers, Jack and Glenn Draine, and three sisters: Ruby and Eloise Draine, as infants, and Phyllis Draine Petera.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at the Sundance United Methodist Church with Pastor Dave Moorman officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Wood, SD at 1:00P.M.,C.S.T. on Wednesday, September 21, 2011.
