Shirley, the daughter of the late Harold Temple and Clara [Aspen] Temple was born on September 28, 1938 in Deadwood, SD.

Shirley graduated from Lead High School in 1956 with top honors in her class. She became a very good pianist. Her father enjoyed listening to Shirley play the piano but believed she had the talent to play the organ. In her early high school years, he gifted her with a Hammond Organ which occupied half of the space in the living room in their home. Shirley learned and played the organ as beautifully as she played the piano. Throughout her high school years Shirley played both the piano and organ for various events, church and accompaniment for groups and soloists.

Following her high school graduation Shirley enrolled in the National School of Business in Rapid City. She graduated at the top of her class with a Certified Legal Secretary degree. She was employed by attorneys in Lead and Deadwood until her marriage to Kenyon Sunding in June 1958. Kenyon was a graduate of the South Dakota School of Mines, his employment took them to several out of state locations for several years. Shirley continued to be a legal secretary in attorney's offices as they changed locations. When the marriage ended Shirley returned to Lead in 1966 and enrolled at Black Hills State University graduating in 1971 with her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education. In the fall of 1971, Shirley began her career at Minnesota State College S.E. in Winona, MN. She was head of the Business Department teaching classes in legal secretary, business law, English composition, court reporting & business decorum. Her students were first picks for employment upon their graduation. Shirley created a good repose with local banks, attorneys and businesses which gave her students 100% placement when they graduated from her Business Department. Shirley was active in the College Faculty Senate and other Departments of MN State College SE during her tenure there. Shirley retired from this 30-year career in 2001.

Shirley moved to Spearfish, in 2002. There she reunited with her high school sweetheart, Dick Crawford. She remained in the love and care of this relationship until her passing.
