Obituary

Shirley Beth (Strevel) Karas, 96, passed away peacefully at home on March 10, 2025.  She was born in Faulkton, South Dakota to Alma and Bert Strevel. Shirley devoted her life to faith, family, and education.

She met the love of her life, Les Karas, through her sister, Dolores. Les, a dedicated law enforcement officer, pursued Shirley relentlessly, winning her heart. Together, they built a loving family, raising four children: Deborah, Donald, David, and Darrell.

Shirley was a beloved teacher, shaping young minds in Faulkton and later teaching third and sixth grade in Lead, South Dakota. She was awarded the prestigious Who's Who of American Women Award. She was deeply involved in her community, serving on the Deadwood Methodist Church Board and leading Bible studies. Her love for quilting was unmatched, and she found great joy in crafting treasured pieces for family and friends.

Holidays and family gatherings were at the heart of Shirley's life. She treasured her home and graciously hosted her daughter's wedding and 10 baptisms. She was known for her kindness, wisdom, and a single look that could instill both discipline and love.

Shirley's legacy is one of unwavering faith, love, and selfless devotion to others. Each grandchild and great-grandchild shares a special bond with her and holds cherished memories that will remain in their hearts forever. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered as a woman who inspired all who knew her.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Lester, and her parents. She is survived by her children: Deborah Seaman and special friend Jerry Quiggin, Donald (Lynnette) Karas, David (Patty) Karas, and Darrell Karas; 11 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; her sister, Dolores Holt; and many nieces and nephews.
