Shirley Nadine Ferrero, 98, life-long resident of Lead, died September 18, 2024 at Monument Health Sturgis Care Center.
Shirley was born in Lead on January 15, 1926 to Brooks H. and Etta M. Whaley and attended schools in Lead and graduated from Lead High School. She married Martin J. (Marty) Ferrero on February 22, 1944 and raised three daughters.
From 1946 to 1974, Marty and Shirley owned and operated Marty's Liquor in Lead. Shirley was then employed as secretary for Twin City Ready Mix until her retirement. She was active in several Bridge Clubs and community groups, and a member of St Patrick Catholic Church, where shesang in the choir.
Shirley is survived by her daughters, MartyAnn Apa, and LuEtta Carlson; grandsons, Marty (Shelly) Aspen, Jarrett and Jeremy Apa; great-grand daughters, Berkeley and Elouise Apa; niece, Lucille (Mike) Basker and nephew Guy (Jill) Kovacevich. Preceding her in death were her parents and husband; a sister, Aleyne Clark; a daughter LouAnn Aspen and a grandson Jason Apa.
Services are scheduled for Tuesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Lead. The rosary will be held at 9:30 a.m. with a Mass of the Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Internment will take place at 12:30 p.m. in the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. A memorial has been established to St. Patrick Catholic Church in Lead.
