IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sam
Dupris
March 31, 1933 – October 23, 2022
Sam Dupris, 89, of Eagle Butte, SD, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, October 23, 2022.
Sam was a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend. Born on the Old Cheyenne River Agency during the Great Depression, Sam enlisted in the Army and was a combat veteran of the Korean War. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his contributions and was honorably discharged. Using the GI Bill, Sam completed flight school and started his career as a crop duster. He later became a pilot for Air America, a covert operation for the CIA. Sam traveled and lived around the world with his family as the first Native American pilot for the FAA for 27 years.
Sam was a fierce advocate for Native American youth and for his tribe. His contributions and unwavering support were recognized with his induction to the SD Aviation Hall of Fame in 2001. The Cheyenne River Sioux tribe acknowledged Sam by proclaiming "August 18, is to be forever known as Sam Dupris Day." Sam was also inducted into the Sioux Warrior Red Feather society, an honor bestowed upon warriors who were courageous in battle and wounded. Red Feather Society members are the only individuals given the honor and privilege of wearing a Red Feather. In 2010, Sam was inducted into the SD Hall of Fame.
In his free time, Sam was an avid historian. He was a proud descendant of Frederick Dupree, who was recognized for saving the buffalo from extinction. Sam knew the history of his people and his stories will be greatly missed. His legacy serves as an exemplar for others.
He is survived by his children, Jennifer (Ray), Michael (Jamie), and Penelope (Helana); grandchildren, Tim (Kristine), Kassandra (Christopher), Katrina (Andrew) and Anthony; daughter-in-law, Gretchen; many nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren; fur babies, Andy and Nemo, and loving friends and family.
