Ruth Surdez, 94 of Spearfish, passed away on April 1, 2014 at the David M. Dorsett Healthcare Center.
Ruth Odland was born on a farm on a farm near Davis, South Dakota on September 18, 1919, the daughter of Ole A. and Andrina (Foglesby) Odland. She moved with her parents to Tea where she attended rural school and grew to womanhood.
On December 11, 1941 Ruth married Cecil E Surdez at Lincoln, Nebraska. After a short honeymoon the couple moved to their residence at Marion, SD where they were engaged in farming. Shortly afterwards the couple moved to a farm east of Lennox. The couple remained there for nearly twenty years before moving to Lennox then to the family farm south of Lennox. After the loss of her husband she moved to Wyoming and later to Spearfish South Dakota. There she lived independently until she was 94 years old, later moving to assisted living.
Ruth was a member of West Prairie Lutheran Church. She was also a member of the Ladies Aid. Bingo was a big part of Ruth's life making a weekly visit to town to play.
Grateful for having shared her life is her son Russell and his wife, Minnie of Spearfish; six grandchildren, Wendy Jorgensen, Dewitt, IA, Todd, Pierre, SD, Tracey Vik, Harrisburg, SD, Shannon Surdez, Rapid City, SD, Tigh Surdez, Eden Prairie, MN, Ashely Surdez, Minneapolis, MN; and 12 grandchildren.
A Memorial service will take place at a later date in Lennox, SD.
Arrangements are under the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapels and Crematory Service of Spearfish.
