A memorial has been established to benefit Crook County Long Term Care Facility.

Russell was born on May 9, 1927 in Draper, SD, to Harvey Bert and Nellie Mae (Chism) Newlin. He lived in SD until age 8, when his family moved to Colorado. In 1944 Russell joined the Navy at age 17. He served on the ship The Tulsa. While on a leave in Denver, he met his future bride, Patricia Mary Andrew, and four boys were born to them Terry, Kelly, Kim and Scott.

Russell was an avid outdoorsman, fisherman and hunter. He was a 30 year member of the Sundance Roping Club and had many close friends within that organization. In his retirement years, he spent many happy hours in his shop doing metal working and wood working projects.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and beloved by family and friends alike. He was known for his friendly outgoing personality and happy smile, and for his willingness to lend a hand to fellow ranchers and anyone in need. His positive attitude and wonderful sense of humor made him a joy to be around.

He is survived by his wife Pat; sons Terry, Kelly (Donna), Kim (Mary) and Scott (Melony); 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister Joann Kenyon and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Betty Lou and Lorraine; brothers-in-law Ron Kenyon, Bill Werts and Ted Bundy; and daughter-in-law Lori Newlin.

Arrangements are under the care of Fidler-Roberts & Isburg Funeral Chapel of Sundance.
