Russell Thorton McIntire, 85 of Spearfish and formerly of Fruitdale passed away on Sunday, October 2, 2011, at Sturgis Regional Hospital.
Visitation will be from 2 P.M.- 7 P.M on Thursday, October 6, 2011 with a Vigil Service to follow at 7:00 P.M.at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M., on Friday, October 7, 2011 at St. Paul's Catholic Church with Father Tim Hoag as Celebrant. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
A memorial has been established to the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology for a student scholarship.
Russell was born on December 13, 1925 by a midwife in Belle Fourche, to James and Laura (Tetreault) McIntire. He was raised and attended elementary school in Fruitdale and graduated as Valedictorian from Belle Fourche High School in 1943. After graduation he attended SDSMT in Rapid City until his schooling was interrupted by WWII, where he was a driver for an Army Major. After returning from the war he married Betty Alice Wharton in June of 1949. He was able to return to SDSMT and graduated with his Electrical Engineer degree in 1950. He worked for General Electric Company but returned to Fruitdale to take over his father's beekeeping business, which he ran until his retirement when his son Greg took over.
Russell was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church and later St. Joseph's in Spearfish, a member and past Grand Knight of Belle Fourche Council of the Knights of Columbus. He was always active in the Fruitdale Community Club and was on the board of directors for the new Belle Fourche Hospital in the 1970's. Russell learned how to ski on his 50th birthday and remained an active skier for 30 years. He enjoyed building and flying radio controlled model airplanes in his retirement. Additionally, for many years he delivered Meals on Wheels for the Spearfish Community.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Greg and grandson, Evan Schmidt.
Russell is survived by his wife Betty of Spearfish; children; Gary (Nina) McIntire, Bill (Essie) McIntire, Jody (Phil) Schmidt, Libby (Chuck) Bender, and Nancy (Joel) Boerger; sister, Audre Kronberg and eleven grandchildren.
