Ross Oates, 74, of Lead, died Monday, September 10, 2012 at Fort Meade VA Medical Center.
Ross was born in Deadwood, on July 12, 1938 to Alice and Harvey Oates. He graduated from Lead High School in 1956. He distinguished himself in high school as the president of student council, as a member of the debate team, in several sporting areas including track, basketball and football, as an actor in many school plays, and as an avid singer.
He went on to the University of South Dakota and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Business. Ross then enlisted in the Army and served in Korea for two years. Upon completion of his service in the Army, Ross started his successful 30 year career in advertising and marketing which saw him living in New York, San Francisco and Texas.
In 1990 he returned to his roots in Lead after suffering a life threatening attack. He rehabilitated with his parents and eventually decided to stay in Lead to support his parents in their later years.
Ross will always be remembered for his easy laugh, big hugs, and playful nature.
Ross is survived by his son, Derek Oates (and wife Laura) of San Luis Obispo, CA; daughter, Renee Osler of Dallas, TX; grand-children, Joshua and Zachary Oates and Chaslen and Coby Osler.
Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 19, 2012 at the Lead-Deadwood Memorial Chapel in Lead with the Rev. Mark Phillips officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Masonic Cemetery (West Lead Cemetery). Family and friends are invited to gather at the Deadwood VFW following the burial for fellowship and refreshments. A memorial has been established.
