Obituary

Rose Emma (McGuigan) Tetrault was born November 8, 1926 to Charles and Mamie (Kerwin) McGuigan at Spearfish, SD.  Rose Emma died peacefully on July 8, 2022 at Belle Estate in Belle Fourche, SD.

Rose E. was raised on the farm NW of Spearfish with her brothers Raymond, Thomas, and Leo, and her dear sister Mary Alice.  She received all of her education in Spearfish, attending Lab School, graduating from Spearfish High School in 1944, and completing 2 ½ years at Spearfish Normal Teachers College.  When she was a freshman in High School, she worked for Henry and Mary Johnson of Spearfish for $3.50/month and two days a week at the St. Onge Store for Mary's sister, Lucille Furois.  She worked at Homestake Sawmill as a secretary in her college years.

On August 18, 1947 she married Carl "Bud" Tetrault at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Spearfish.  They lived on the Tetrault Brothers Ranch at St. Onge where they raised their four children: Susan, Rebecca, James, and Timothy.  Together with Mary Alice and Bud's brother, Allen, they ran a dairy and raised their families side by side, which created a very special bond between the two families for generations.  Rose E. and Mary Alice lived next door for many many years, enjoying an afternoon game of cribbage nearly every day in their later years.  Mary Alice moved to Belle Estates and Rose E.  later joined her as her roommate where their beautiful sister bond continued.

Rose E. started working at Madden Livestock as a waitress and later worked in the office for many years.  Among other jobs, she enjoyed working at Spearfish Clothier and LaMode Dress Shop until her retirement.  She made countless friends with her co-workers and customers through the years with her big smile and sparkling brown eyes.  She went through all of the Chapters of Beta Sigma Phi, was a member of St. Onge Extension Club, St. Onge Community Club, and St. Joseph's Catholic Church.  She also volunteered with the American Cancer Society and Western Heritage Museum in Spearfish for several years.

Rose E. was proud of her Irish Heritage, her strong Catholic faith, her family, and extended family.  She was an artist, seamstress, Rosary Warrior, and teacher to many.  She taught us how to ice skate, swim, and dance (to Lawrence Welk in the dining room), and play cards.  She was famous for her fried chicken, homemade buns, and peanut bars at family picnics.  Her Christmas Tea Rings and Easter Bunny Cakes were enjoyed by many over the years.  Rose E. was the one you went to for a haircut, a perm, a ride, a shoulder to cry on, or just a listening ear.  She showed us that you can be kind and caring yet strong and independent and to conquer life as it comes.  She loved dancing, playing cards (a Master of Cribbage until her final days), watching football, and most of all spending time with her friends and family.  She traveled endless miles to cheer on her family in their many sports and activities, no matter the weather.  We will all miss our biggest fan!

She is survived by her children Sioux Tetrault, Becky (Gerald) Burghduff, Jim (Tawny) Tetrault, and Tim (Roxie) Tetrault; Grandchildren Thane (Monique) Tetrault, Tyler (Breynn) Tetrault, Trevin (Bailey) Tetrault, Tanner (Laura) Tetrault, Tee (Tabitha) Tetrault, Tonn (Haylee) Tetrault, Tallen (Shayla) Tetrault, Natalie (Ryan) Glines, and Alicia Burghduff; 18 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Mamie, husband Carl "Bud" Tetrault, brothers Charles (infant), Raymond, Thomas, and Leo, sister Mary Alice, and grandson Shawn Burghduff.
