Ronald Butler Rosenau Sr., 86, longtime resident of Spearfish, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on March 7, 2013 at Fort Meade VA Medical Center.
Ron was born on April 18, 1926 in Geneva Nebraska to Dr Harold and Blanche (Butler) Rosenau. He spent his childhood years in Geneva and graduated from Geneva High School in 1944. Shortly after graduating from high school he went on to serve in the US Army in the Korean War. After returning from the war he attended and graduated from Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska. While attending college there he met Marilyn Mensen, they married on August 30, 1953. Ron went on to attend the University of Nebraska and earned his Master's Degree and Administrative Specialist. He spent his working career in School Administration at schools in Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota. Ron was the High School then Junior High Principal from 1969 to 1988 for the Spearfish School District.
After his retirement Ron and Marilyn went on to travel all over the world and had many wonderful adventures and memories of their times together. Ron always enjoyed camping with his family, but especially with his beloved grandchildren. He also enjoyed taking care of his roses, coin collecting, music and helping out with the Boy Scouts.
Ron was a charter member of the Spearfish Kiwanis and Black Hills Barbershop. He was a member of the Spearfish United Church of Christ where he served on various boards and committees, sang in the choir, taught Sunday school and was a member of Kings Men.
He will be greatly missed by his wife Marilyn, Spearfish; daughters, Kathleen (Chuck) Standen, Spearfish, Rebecca (John) Wilkinson, Colorado Springs, CO; sons Ronald (Janet) Jr., Randall (LeAnn) both of Spearfish and Richard Cheyenne, WY; fourteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; sister, Beth Barlow, Chula Vista CA, and brother, Dr Harold (Virginia) Rosenau, York, NE. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son and grandson.
Visitation will be from 5-7 P.M. on Sunday, March 10, 2013 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish. Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Monday, March 11, 2013 at the United Church of Christ in Spearfish. Burial with military honors by the Spearfish Honor Guard will take place at Black Hills National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established.
