Robert E. Collins

Robert “Bob” Eugene Collins, 87, passed away peacefully in hospice care on June 3, 2026. Bob was born on May 9, 1939, at the Deadwood Hospital to Jewell Perrigoue Collins and Jefferson Collins. After losing his mother to heart disease at the tender age of five, Bob was raised by his aunt, Maryanne Perrigoue, and Grandma Perrigoue.

As the proud owner of Collins Construction, Bob was well known throughout the Spearfish community for his hard work, dedication and integrity. His commitment to his hometown extended well beyond his business; he also served as fire chief for the Spearfish Fire Department, dedicating his time to protecting the community he loved.

An outdoor enthusiast, Bob enjoyed bringing people together and spent years organizing legendary group outings. These included ski trips to Colorado and Montana; a three day “Golfathon” in Nebraska; annual pheasant hunting in eastern SD, and late May treks to fish for walleye. Bob raised five boys and shared these passions generously with them, leaving lasting memories of adventure and camaraderie.

Bob was also an avid reader with an extensive knowledge of World War II history. He loved keeping family history alive by telling stories about his relatives who fought in the war. Above all Bob was a true dog lover who found great joy in the companionship of his canine friends.

Bob is survived by his daughter, Victoria Greenlee; his sons, Stuart and Scott Collins; and his stepsons, Andrew, Nick, and Joe Schreiner. He is also survived by his brothers, Terrance, Steve and Michael Collins, and his sisters, Debbie Collins, Cindy Wagner, Molly Olson, and Kathy Zimmerschied.

A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at 3:00, Saturday, June 27, 2026 at the Spearfish Fire Hall on Canyon Street. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial donations be made to Hobo’s Healing Heart in honor of Bob Collins and his lifelong love of dogs. Through Hobo’s Healing Heart, Bob’s memory will continue helping families keep beloved pets in need of emergency veterinary care with those who love them and providing dignified farewells when the time comes.
