Richard Storms, 72, of Deadwood passed away on Sunday, July 23, 2017 after a long illness.
A Cold War veteran of the USAF and a 35 year member of BMW MOA, he enjoyed touring the U.S. on numerous BMW motorcycles, including visits to the Sturgis Rally and many BMW festivals held around the U.S.
Following a civil service career and those of a news photographer and editor in the book industry, he came to the Black Hills, permanently, in 1996. His love of motorcycling led to becoming a founding member of the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum.
A connoisseur of great meals (AKA: a foodie), Richard enjoyed afternoon picnics and quite dinners, becoming good friends with local chefs and purveyors of fresh food. An avid reader, live music in the Adirondacks and the western South Dakota region was another of his favorite activities.
A life member of Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, the NRA and IHMSA, he competed in state, regional and international silhouette competitions well into the late 90s and more recently in F-Class Mid Range rifle matches throughout the region. A lifelong hunter, fall always found him in the woods or on the plains, pursuing game of all sorts.
Predeceased by his parents and younger brother, he is survived by his best friend, Judith Bracken. Cremation has taken place. Inurnment with Full Military Honors will be held on Friday, July 28, 2017, at 1:30pm at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.
