Raymond T. Running, 91, died Saturday, November 26, 2011, at his home in Spearfish.
Services will be at 10:00 A.M., Monday, December 5, 2011, at the Spearfish United Church of Christ. Inurnment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.
Raymond was born November 18, 1920, in Dickinson, ND, the son of Josef and Hazel Running. In 1925, he moved with his family to Spearfish, where he grew up and graduated from high school. Ray enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1942 and served as an Aerial Tail Gunner on a B-24 with the 15th Air Force based in Italy.
He entered South Dakota State University in the fall of 1945. After graduating in 1950, he taught agriculture to World War II Veterans in Meade County. On September 22, 1950, he married Helen Mahoney in Spearfish. Together they farmed, ranched and raised their family in Spearfish Valley. Raymond was proud of selling "the best corn in South Dakota", and enjoyed sharing stories with loyal lifelong customers and friends. He continued to operate the Running vegetable stand through 2008.
Raymond is survived by his children, Barbara Running, Anchorage, AK; Bonnie (Daniel) Gebhardt, Bozeman, MT; Cheryl (Steve) Corneliusen, Glendive, MT; Peter (Mary) Running, Spearfish; 10 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Lois Henderson, Lake Forest, CA; Helen Wood, Littleton, CO and his brother, Hans Running, Hillsboro, OR.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; son, Josef; and brothers James and Donald Running.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Legion for the construction of the Spearfish Veteran's Monument at Indian Springs in the City Park.
