Raymond F. Hertel, 83, of Deadwood, SD, died November 12, 2012 at the Lead-Deadwood Regional Hospital, Deadwood.
Ray was born December 4, 1929 to Fred and Anna (Zimmerman) Hertel at McLaughlin, SD. He was raised on the family farm, attending school in McLaughlin. Ray worked the farm and other area farms until he was drafted in the Army during the Korean Conflict. After completing his service time, he moved to the Black Hills and began working for Homestake Mining Company in 1953. He worked underground as a miner, motorman and chute puller for 36 years, retiring in 1989.
On February 14, 1955, he married Eloise "Deloris" DeVilleneuve and to this union two children were born. Ray was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in McLaughlin and was an active member at Grace Lutheran Church in Deadwood, where he did many different jobs.
Ray is survived by his children, Steven Ray Hertel and Lynell Kay (Ken) Gienger; grandchildren, Weston John (Jayme) Gienger, Justin Lee (Melody) Gienger, Shelby Christian Hertel, a great- grandchild, Gabriel John Gienger and many brothers and sisters, Leonard, Alfred, Martin, Lawrence, Delaines, Willie, Harvey, Rodney, Delray, Stanley, Jeanette, Shirley, Lemore and Timothy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, sister Hertha and brothers Harvey, Lloyd and Leroy.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M., Saturday, November 17, 2012, Grace Lutheran Church, Deadwood, with funeral service beginning at 11:00 A.M. Burial will be Monday, November 19 at Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis. A memorial has been established to Grace Lutheran Church.
