Obituary

Phyllis Lang, 86, died on June 14, 2013 at the Lead-Deadwood Regional Hospital. Several weeks prior, she had fallen in her home of 60 years, and this accident precipitated her short hospitalization and death

Memorial services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, June 29, 2013 at Christ Church Episcopal Church in Lead. A memorial has been established to Christ Church Episcopal Church.

Phyllis Mary Lang was born in Rapid City on October 5, 1926 to Clifford and Gertrude Lang. She and her family moved to Lead in the fall of 1931. Phyllis graduated from Lead High in 1944. She started working for Black Hills Amusement Company at the Homestake Theatre in 1942 and continued working part time there until 1958. After working at the Miners and Merchants Bank for a period of time, Phyllis then worked for the South Dakota Department of Labor. She retired from that job in 1982 after 36 years.

Phyllis was always involved in Lead civic matters, more recently having helped lead a movement to prevent nude dancing in Lead bars. She has been a member of Christ Church Episcopal Church for 81 years and has been continuously involved with the Altar Society as an adult. She also has been a member of the Christ Church Episcopal Women's group. One of their long term efforts, which Phyllis greatly enjoyed, is the making and sale of pasties to help pay for renovation projects on the church. Phyllis also was a 60 year member of the women's group Beta Sigma Phi.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents and one brother Robert Lang. She is survived by brother, Roger (Florence) Lang, sister-in-law, Dorothy Lang and many nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her "second family" of Reed Richards and Ester Munoz Richards and their children. .

Phyllis enjoyed living in Lead and treasured her many friendships established over her lifetime. She had extensive knowledge of the various ethnic neighborhoods in early Lead and the wonderful diversity they brought to the area. Surveying her "domain" from the living room of her beautiful old home on Galena Street, there was little going on in Lead that Phyllis didn't know of or have an opinion about. All who entered her house left as friends and admirers of this remarkable person. She was a woman ahead of her time with intelligence, independence, opinions (which she offered forcefully) and good humor. She will be missed.

Arrangements are under the care of the Lead-Deadwood Memorial Chapel in Lead.
