Obituary

Philip P. Martin, 88, Lead, SD died Sunday, January 24, 2015 at Custer Regional Senior Care.

Philip was born December 5, 1927 at Reliance, SD to Thomas and Agnes (Heller) Martin. He moved with his family to Lead at a young age. He attended St. Joseph's Catholic School while growing up in Lead. After school he enlisted in the US Army and served in the Korean War. After discharge from the Army, Philip returned to Lead, where he worked for Homestake Mining Company. Philip and his brother Jim then bought the Conoco station from their parents. They ran the station for many years, helping many friends towing and fixing cars.

Philip was a lifetime member of the VFW, NRA and Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. Philip loved Spearfish Canyon; he worked at Latchstring Inn, building the porch. He also enjoyed helping his step-son Richard build a cabin beside Spearfish Creek. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping.

Philip is survived by Judy Woodworth, Lead; brother, Raymond Martin, Marblehead, MA; step-children, Valerie, Barbara and Richard; niece and nephews, Kent, Mark and Chris. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and two sisters.

There will be a Rosary Service for Philip at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Deadwood at 9:30 AM, Wednesday, January 27, 2016, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM. Inurnment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Arrangements are under the care of Lead-Deadwood Memorial Chapel of Lead.
