Peggy M. Cleveland, 97 of Lead was called home on August 1, 2024.
Peggy was born September 29, 1926, in Deadwood, South Dakota. Her parents were Clarence and Viola Pittenger, she attended school in Lead, SD. Peggy married Richard A. Cleveland in 1946 and were married for 38 years. He preceded her in death in 1984. The couple had three children: Richard H. Cleveland of Sturgis, SD, Dixie L. Merritt of Cedar Rapids, IA and Robert L. Cleveland of St. Mary's, GA.
Peggy's husband Richard was in the US Air Force for 24 years. During that time, they were stationed in England and France and vacationed in Switzerland. In the United States they were stationed at bases in Maine, New Mexico and Rapid City, SD. Peggy retired from the Lead-Deadwood Hospital formerly known as Northern Hills General Hospital in Deadwood. She started as a nurse's aid and retired as a physical therapist assistant. Following retirement, she operated the Free Store in Lead for many years. Peggy was active at Trinity United Methodist Church in Lead for many years. In 1998, she was honored with the Good Samaritan Award, presented by the Lead-Deadwood Ministerial Association.
Peggy is survived by her three children along with eight grandchildren; Richard H. Cleveland, NC, Nikki M. Kaelin, TX, Danny L. White, IA, Dene` L. Atcheson, NV, Denise L. Gillott, NY, Donald Cleveland, London, England, Lee A. Cleveland, GA and David R. Cleveland, GA. 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00AM, on Thursday, August 15, 2024, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Lead, SD. The burial will be at 1:30 PM at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Twin City Area Clothing Center.
