Obituary

Pauline D. Kanode, 99, of Sundance, WY passed away on November 10th in Sundance.

Pauline was born December 11, 1916 in Alva, Wyoming, the first child of Claude and Lottie Dillon.
Pauline was raised on the family homestead on Taylor Divide in the Bear Lodge Mountains. She grew up in a close-knit family with her parents and brothers during the depression era; "hard work, no money" she often said.

Education was difficult to access in the sparsely populated area around her family's home. Her earliest elementary school years were at Taylor Divide. Later, she and her grandmother lived in Farrall when school was in session to allow her to attend upper grade school years. A high school education was very important to Pauline and she attended several schools in order to graduate. Her freshman year of high school was completed through correspondence study. She stayed with families and worked for her room and board in Belle Fourche for her sophomore year of high school, Lead her junior year and finally Spearfish, where she graduated from high school. She was insistent that her brothers complete their high school education and do so without the frequent school changes she experienced. She boarded them while she worked in Sundance to enable them to attend school and graduate from Sundance High School.

Pauline worked for Mona Short Line as a telephone switchboard operator, or "hello girl" in Aladdin in 1937. She followed this by working for the Farmer's Home Administration in Sundance for ten years, where she met her future husband, Jess. Pauline married Jess Kanode on May 22, 1949, becoming step-mother to his four children. Two children were born to the marriage. In 1947, Pauline went to work for Security Trust and Title Company and began doing abstracting work and mineral searches. She became manager when the office was purchased by First American Title Insurance Company. She spent a forty-eight year career in the title business, doing work she thoroughly loved. She enjoyed working with all of her Crook County customers over the years. She reluctantly retired in September 1995 when she was 78.

Pauline was a member of Rebekah Lodge #29 serving as Noble Grand and Secretary, Sundance Methodist Church serving as financial secretary for 25+ years, VFW Auxiliary serving as secretary for over 20-years and the Crook County Hospital Auxiliary. Pauline's hobbies included her indoor and outdoor plants, being especially fond of her begonias and African violets.

Pauline loved her family and the many visits she received from friends and family in her later years. She kept a journal, noting the events of her day and in her later years her visitors and phone calls.

Pauline is survived by her children Blanche (Nick) Conom, Jerry (Sharon) Kanode, daughter-in-law Betty Kanode, Claudette (Terry) Wham and Floyd (Janet) Kanode. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Pauline was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers Leon (Polly and Lee) Dillon and Rex (Leona) Dillon, sisters-in-law Ellen (Earl) Brechbill, Leora Kanode and Elda Kanode, daughter Jean (Michael) Madden, son Walter Kanode, and a grandson.

Memorial services will be 10 A.M., Friday, November 18th at Sundance United Methodist Church. Memorials have been established for the Sundance United Methodist Church, Sundance Chapel of Faith and Sundance VFW Post 4311.

Arrangements are under the direction of Fidler-Roberts & Isburg Funeral Chapel of Sundance.
