Pat Coffield, 81 of Spearfish, passed away on August 9, 2014 at the Ft. Meade Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center after a battle with cancer.
Patrick Edgar Coffield was born on October 4, 1932 in Reeder, ND to Hubert and Lucille (Larson) Coffield. Pat grew up in Reva, SD, attended school in Brookings, SD, and lived various places, returning home intermittently to help his dad with the home place. In the fall of 1953, he enlisted in the army, where he served most of his tour of duty in France. Upon his return, he went to work in the oil fields, married Delores Tenold, had two children and lived in various states working as a driller on the oil rigs. In 1964, they moved to Buffalo, SD where he worked construction and was later a Ford/Mercury dealer and mechanic. In 1968, he married Fay Lyons and settled in Buffalo where he owned several businesses, including the Standard Oil bulk and a propane business. In 1997, he retired and moved to Spearfish, SD where he lived out his retirement years enjoying his great-grandchildren.
Patrick loved life and was always known for responding to the question, "How are you?" with, "Wonderful, wonderful, best day of my life and I expect tomorrow to be even better." He was an inventor at heart and spent the last of his retirement years working part-time at the Lead dump. He was always bringing home lawn mowers, snow blowers, and other items people had discarded, so that he could repair and sell them or pass them on to someone in need. He was a great resource to many who would call upon him for information about car repair, furnaces, construction, or anything else with which they needed help. He was a very giving man and will be greatly missed by family, friends, and all who relied on him for advice and a helping hand.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Roger Coffield, his brother Clarence, and his twin sisters Elma Johnson and Ellen Besler. He is survived by his sister, Marie Packard of Pine Haven, WY; his brother, Arnold Coffield of Wheatland, WY; Fay, his wife of 46 years, daughter Janice (and Robert) Koski, all of Spearfish; son Justin (and Wanda) Lyons of Buffalo, SD; daughter Tina Beynon of Vernal, Utah; son, Terry Lyons of Castle Rock, CO; grandchildren Rob Lyons, Angie (and Eli) Atkinson, Colby Beynon, Shawn Lyons, Michele Koski, Tera Lyons, Shalane Beynon, Chelsea Lyons, Trevor Lyons, and Shane Patrick Lyons, and 4 great grandchildren, Lillian Miles, Colin Patrick Atkinson, Jaydon Miles, and Chloe Fay Lyons as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services for Pat will be at 2:30 PM, Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Spearfish. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.
