Orville was born on October 21, 1933 in Spencer, South Dakota to Sanford and Gladys (Smith) Varns. He attended elementary school in Spencer, and finished his schooling in Custer, South Dakota. He married his High School sweetheart, Betty Solomon, on August 3, 1952 in Custer, where the couple began their family. During this time, Orville worked for the local sawmill. While living in Lead, their fourth child was born. After retirement, the couple moved to Belle Fourche, then later to Spearfish.

Orville loved life with his family. Together they enjoyed holidays, picnics, drives through the Black Hills, long road trips around the United States, and spending time with family and friends. In his younger years, Orville drove floats for the Labor Day parade in Lead. His hobbies included fishing, pheasant hunting, and walking. He was a member of the United Steel Workers of America union, and of Lead Assembly of God. More recently Orville and Betty attended Calvary Temple Assembly of God in Spearfish. Orville enjoyed the simple things of life, and taught others to do the same. He had a quiet, gentle, loving spirit. A lasting memory will always be his laughter. He enjoyed playing dice, Sequence, and Aggravation.
