Olivia (Kramer) Kaul, 93 of Spearfish, formerly of Ashley, North Dakota and Leola, South Dakota passed away on June 29, 2017 at Spearfish Regional Hospital.
Olivia was born on April 3, 1924 to Karl and Emilia (Schmidt) of Ashley. She graduated from Ashley High School and taught in a rural school in the Ashley area. On October 14, 1945, she married Erwin Kaul in Ashley. They farmed north of Ashley until 1951 when they moved to the Kaul family farm in Leola. Theirs was a cow-calf operation as well as a grain farm. She also raised a huge garden, canned the produce, raised and butchered chickens, sold the eggs, milked cows, and helped with hauling grain.
Olivia belonged to the Leola Agrigula Club, many St. James Lutheran organizations, bridge clubs, golfing ladies, and was treasurer for the Rhubarb Days committee for many years. Olivia and Erwin owned and operated an appliance store in Leola and the last 17 years of her employment career was spent cooking for the Leola Senior Citizens. She was well known for her delicious meals and served over a hundred and twenty dinners at one time. In 2007, she moved to Spearfish to be close to family. She continued cooking for family; favorites were dumplings and sausage, and desserts for her friends. She also enjoyed quilting with the Our Saviors Lutheran ladies, playing bridge at the Senior Citizens Center, and playing games with her friends in the Redwood apartments.
Olivia was preceded in death by her husband Erwin in 2002; her brothers, Gideon, Andy, Izzie, and Eddie Kramer. She is survived by her sons, Bob (Jean) Kaul, Jerry (Mary) Kaul; grandchildren, Melissa Kaul (Jeff Seward), Lynn (George) Milos, Tara (Ben) Rabe, Talli (Kevin) Dorf, and Brandon (Bonnie) Griess; great grandchildren, Codi Jones, Baylee (Nick) Kerkvliet, Kylie and Sidney McFarland, Logan and Kendall Dorf, Raylan and Liesl Griess.
A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Condolences may be directed to Bob Kaul at 3715 LaCosta Dr., Rapid City, SD, 57703. Her wishes were that any memorials be given to the Our Saviors Lutheran Quilters and the Senior Center of Spearfish.
Arrangements are under the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapels and Crematory Service of Spearfish. Online condolences may be written at www.fidler-isburgfuneralchapels.com.
