Norman Lee Hertel, 89, of Lead, passed away peacefully at the Fort Meade VA Hospital, surrounded by the love of family, on September 28th, 2022 at 12:30 pm.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00am, October 5, 2022 at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Lead with visitation to take place one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial with full military honors will take place at Black Hills National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church.
Norman was born on November 5th, 1932 in McLaughlin, SD to Katherine and Emil Hertel. He was the eldest of 11 children. In 1945, the Hertel family moved to Dupree, SD where Norman attended school until 8th grade. Afterward, he went to work on the family farm.
In 1952, Norman joined the United States Army and served his country for three years as a Military Policeman in El Paso, Texas. In December of 1955, Norman started working for Homestake Mining Company and stayed for over 30 years. On April 7, 1956 he was married to the love of his life, Mary "Amy" Schuchhardt. Together they had five children Michael, Debra, Scott, Mark and LeAnn.
Norman was a jack of all trades and found joy in fixing things for people. He also enjoyed the company of others–sharing stories and laughter and was a cherished member of his community. During his visits with family and friends, Norman loved playing cards and is known for his talent in the game of marbles. However, there is speculation that he would bend the rules to be the consistent marbles champion. Norman had a natural gift in woodworking and blessed many grandchildren with cradles and rocking horses; and others with quilt racks, cooling racks and, most recently, an adjustable napkin holder! If Norman put his mind to it, there was nothing he couldn't do.
Norman was a member of the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Lead, SD, where he enjoyed fellowshipping with the women while quilting as well as the men at breakfast every Thursday.
Norman is survived by his daughters, Debra (Barry) Wilbourn and LeAnn (George) Vandine; sons, Scott and Mark (Pia); grandchildren, Nathan (Janny) Wilbourn, Megan Wilbourn, Danielle Hertel, Joshua Hertel, Bailey (Tanner) Willard, Thomas (Michelle) Hertel, Elizabeth (Ronnie) Hancock, George Warren (Savannah) Vandine and Wade (Karli) Vandine; great-grandchildren, Landon Wilbourn, Rhett Willard, Theodore Hertel, Wyatt Hancock and Graham Vandine; siblings, Margie, Marvin (Lesa), Kenny (Virginia) and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary "Amy"; son, Michael; siblings, Iola, Lester, Julius, Eugene, Ronnie, Marilyn and Zella (Snooky).
