Obituary

Norma Ilene Thomson, 93, of Spearfish, SD passed away on Wednesday, February 8, 2017, at Belle Fourche Healthcare Center in Belle Fourche, SD.

Norma was born on July 11, 1923 to Walter Washington Porter and Hazel Izetta (McConnell) Porter in Geddes, South Dakota. She attended school in Geddes, graduating from Geddes High School in 1941.
She married Louis Thomas Thomson on January 7, 1942, just 30 days after the attack on Pearl Harbor. They farmed near Platte, SD until 1946 when they moved into Platte where they owned and operated a bowling alley and café. The family moved to Custer State Park in 1956, where Louis worked for the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department. They moved to Spearfish, SD in 1959, where they operated a dairy farm west of Spearfish until 1971. In 1971, Bob Christofferson helped Louis and Norma build Norma's dream home near the Homestake Sawmill.

Norma was a 4-H leader for many years and a member of the Lower Valley Extension Club, the Black Hills Dairy Association, and the Women's Fellowship at the United Church of Christ.

Norma is survived by her two sons, James (Kathi), of Sturgis, SD and Paul (Michele), of Spearfish, SD; one daughter Carolyn (Gerald) Schuldies, of Spearfish, SD; many dearly loved grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and one sister, Shirley (Bob) Broome, of High Rolls, NM. Also surviving are one brother-in-law, Richard Postma of Corsica, SD and one sister-in-law, Edith Porter, of Geddes, SD as well as many, many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis; one son and daughter-in-law, Keith (Norma) Thomson; her parents; siblings, Valda (Walter) Drake of San Diego, CA, Richard (Janice) Porter of Platte, SD, Loretta (Edward) King, of Platte, SD, Ramond Porter of Geddes, SD, and Muriel Porter of Platte, SD.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Norma's name to the United Church of Christ in Spearfish.

Norma's family will be gathering from 1:00pm to 4:00pm on Sunday, February 12, 2017 at Studio 621 in Spearfish, located at 621 Main Street in Spearfish. All friends are welcome.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, February 13, 2017, at the United Church of Christ in Spearfish. Burial will follow the funeral service at Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
