Obituary

Nora Beth Smith Danforth journeyed to the Spirit World, Tuesday, February 5, 2008 in Spearfish, SD after a long and brave battle with COPD.

Nora "Snow on the Ground Woman" was born August 12, 1954 in Oneida, Wisconsin, to Edith Smith Reed. She is a member of the Bear Clan of the Oneida Tribe of Wisconsin.

She met her life partner, Isadore Zephier at a National Congress of American Indian conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1988 Nora and her family went to France as part of a delegation of Oglalas to receive a gift of land to the Lakota from the Government of France, to demonstrate France's support for the Lakota People.

She was a devout follower of the way of the Pipe, and was active in Native American issues. Nora was a traditional women's dancer as well as a participant in Sundance ceremonies. She was well known in the area for her 'fry bread' which she contributed to the BHSU Lakota Omniciye Wacipi Buffalo Feed for many years.

Nora was a graduate of Black Hills State University with a Masters in Business Services Management and a Bachelor of Science in American Indian Studies with a minor in Journalism. Nora was an educational consultant for many years and was last employed by the Alliance of Tribal Tourism Advocates in Rapid City.

Nora was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and will be sadly missed by her family in Wisconsin as well as all her friends and family in South Dakota.

She is survived by her two sons; Red Tail Zephier, Worthington MN, and Red Elk Zephier, Spearfish, SD, her granddaughter Nona Zephier, Browning MT; her family in Wisconsin; brothers Jack (Beth) Smith, Dave (Charlene) Smith; her aunties Becky (Eldred) Nicholas and Alfreda (Allan) Green; uncle Dean (Jean) Smith; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives; Hunka (adopted) sisters Jace DeCory & Rilea Moyer, Spearfish, and Katala Okolakiciye Winyan Society sisters. Nora was preceded in death by her mother, infant daughter, uncles Erwin, Robin and Sylvester 'Sal'; aunties Melinda Doxtator, and Priscilla Lyons.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Ryan Funeral Home, DePere, Wisconsin. Visitation will be Sunday, February 10th at Ryan Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m., followed by a final visitation Monday, February 11th at 9 a.m. at the Oneida Methodist Church with funeral services following at 11 a.m.
