On May 10, 2013, the Lord took Niels Anton Nelson by the hand on his final journey, his loving wife by his side, after spending two and a half years at the David M. Dorsett Healthcare Center.

Niels was born July 14, 1922 in Dupree, SD to Anton and Hansine (Sorensen) Nelson and grew up on a ranch south of Eagle Butte.
His service in the US Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater, Philippines shaped his love for his country and dedication as a veteran. He was a sixty-three year member of the American Legion and Past Post Commander.

Niels eloped with Maxine to Pierre, SD on July 5, 1958. They were married just shy of 55 years. They ranched by Eagle Butte until they moved to their ranch in St. Onge. He was known in the Spearfish community as he worked to the tender age of 78. Even though he could appear rough on the edges, he will be remembered by his family as a caring, loving, good provider, mentor, and a devoted husband who took joy and pride spoiling his beloved wife.

Niels spent his life working hard; he could build anything but valued duct tape and bailing wire. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, roller skating, riding horses, and playing with all his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Niels is survived by his wife Maxine of Spearfish; his children, Wanda, Frederick (Micheline), John (Donna), Ida all of South Dakota; his grandchildren, Kristina, Travis, Amanda, Jaimie, Tarah, Alexis; and great grandchildren, Christian, Colby, Matthew, Elise, Hailey, Austin, Kolbe, Nathan; and other relatives.

Niels was preceded in death by his parents and his grandson Clinton Nelson.

Memorial services will at 10:00 am on June 3, 2013 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish, and he will be laid to rest at the Black Hills National Cemetery at 11:30 am. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to the Spearfish Post 164 of the American Legion, 19650 Mossing Lane, Spearfish, SD 57783
