John "Nick" Heinen, 75 of Spearfish passed away on March 20, 2019 at Spearfish Regional Hospital. Heaven received another angel and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Visitation will be from 5-6 PM on Sunday, March 24, 2019 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Spearfish. Vigil will follow at 6 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 AM on Monday, March 25 at the church. Private family inurnment will take place at a later time. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
Born April 17, 1943 to Loring & Helen (Jacobson) Heinen in Denver, CO, Nick grew up in Lead, SD and graduated from Lead High School. He furthered his education, graduating from BHSC in Spearfish in 1966.
Nick married his loving wife of 55 years, Jackie (Maki) in 1962. To this union, three children were born, Tammy, Mark and Lorie.
Nick spent 35 years as an educator and coach, teaching PE/Health, Industrial Arts, Welding, Woodworking and Electronics; five years in Nebraska and 30 years in the Lead-Deadwood School System. Nick coached wrestling, football, basketball and track, being voted Coach of The Year in 1989 by the SD Football Association. In 2005 & 2006 he was the Assistant Coach of the Year, elected by SDCCTCA. In 2007, he had the honors of inaugural inductee into the Lead-Deadwood Hall of Fame. After retirement, Nick spent many years collecting and working on vintage cars. Jackie and Nick belonged to the SD Gold Dust Chapter of the VMCA and the Black Hills Model T Club.
Nick is survived by his wife Jackie; his daughters, Tammy (Pat) Hollenbeck and Lorie (Jim) Wieser; his son, Mark (Teri) Heinen; his grandchildren, Sarah, Mike, Luke, Andrew, Jake, Becca and Garrett; his great-grandchildren, Kaylee Jo, River and Russell; his two sisters, Jane (Mike) Holeton and Debb Proctor; many nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends. He is very much loved.
