Nancy Lindsay Young, 89 of Spearfish, SD, passed away unexpectedly on Sept 5, 2018, however she had lived a long and happy life of which I will tell you a little.
Nancy was born on Thanksgiving Day 1928 in the small town of Columbiana, Ohio, the daughter of Samuel and Lillian Lindsay. She grew up in the Great Depression in a resourceful family that grew their own food and had their own cow. They never had a hungry day and this upbringing reinforced a resilience in her that lasted a life time. She was a beautiful, smart girl and had a wonderful school experience that included being a majorette, National Honor Society inductee and a member of a championship Aquacade swimming team that traveled the local region giving performances to depression weary people anxious to see something uplifting.
Things changed rapidly for Nancy at a barn dance at Guilford Lake. There she met a good looking guy, Dale Young, who had just returned from WWII Navy service. He soon became her husband, a bond that lasted 71 years. It was the beginning of an active and fun life that made her the matriarch of a family with 41 direct descendants including 5 children, 16 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
Dale had started a construction company at age 18 that he and Nancy ran as their life's business. Their life together involved a lot of hard work but along the way included a lot of fun and travel. Due to being a small family owned construction business, Dale would build a house, the family would move into it and then start another house while offering their current residence for sale. This imparted to family members the strong notion that home is where the heart is and has little to do with the house you live in. That being said, when your home is often for sale one becomes a meticulous house keeper so your home is always ready to show to prospective buyers. This style of life, in addition to raising 5 children, required someone to be in charge of the home front - this was Nancy. It did earn her several loving nick names including "the Commandant", "Boss Lawrence" and finally a tag bestowed by a young and adoring grandson when he asked, "Is Grandma the Family Guard?".
Nancy's life included lots of traveling vacations to see the national parks, summer fishing trips to Canada to stay at her Brother Jack's fishing Lodge, and water skiing almost every weekend. Then there were the school years of shepherding five active kids thru every activity imaginable. Nancy and Dale were strong believers in education and saw to it that all 5 of their children graduated from college. Nancy was an avid Ohio State fan and got so excited during games that if the Buckeyes ever got behind in the score she would take refuge in her bedroom until the score improved. As her children grew older she pursued her own dream in education, receiving first an LPN and later an RN nursing license. She was very proud that after seeing to her children's education she earned her own degree. She worked for many years as an intensive care unit and emergency room nurse where she was uniquely prepared to handle fast changing situations due to her life experience running a family business while raising a large family.
As her children matured and spread across the country, Nancy and Dale often followed along, living for a time in Alaska, California, and South Dakota. While in California, Nancy was at the epicenter of the Loma Prieta earthquake. She also worked in the ER at Stanford University Hospital which presented a very different type of patient than her small home town hospital, gunshot wounds in California vs car and farm accidents in Ohio. Nancy and Dale finally ended up in Spearfish, South Dakota with 3 of their sons in the early 1980's. Nancy spent many happy years there watching her family grow, rarely missing a family member's school athletic, academic, or musical activity. She also adored her card club and was lucky to make many friends.
Nancy was surrounded by her husband and family as she passed. She will be sorely missed.
Survivors include her husband, Dale; 4 sons, Dale II (Donna) Young of Juneau, AK, Greg Young, Mark (Traci) Young, and Todd (Hue) Young, all of Spearfish, SD; and daughter, Anne Young Bennett of Columbiana, Ohio.
