Nancy L. Mead, age 92, of Spearfish, South Dakota passed away on December 7, 2017 at Belle Estate in Belle Fourche, SD.
Nancy was born to Vayne and Daisy (Easterday) Lowry on February 9, 1925, in Madison, SD. She was the third of four children. Nancy grew up in Madison, SD. She graduated from Madison High School, attended General Beadle State College, and then received her B. A. in business from the University of South Dakota In 1947.
She married Thomas E. Mead on September 5, 1947. They lived in Ipswich, S.D. and Iowa City, Iowa, before Tom entered active duty in the Navy. While Tom was in the Navy, they lived in Coronado CA, Chandler, AZ, Pensacola, FL, and San Diego, CA. After his tour, he practiced in Howard, S.D before moving to Spearfish where Tom began a 30-year practice as family physician. They had five children Patty (James) Long, Missouri Valley, IA; Tom (Marilyn), Spearfish; Linda, Spearfish; Bob (Susan-Salt Lake City, Utah); and Martha (Dan) Svatos, Lake Andes, SD. In 1966 Azucena Selves of Uruguay, became part of the family when they hosted her through the AFS program.
Nancy enjoyed traveling, reading, doing handwork, and family times.
Nancy was active in All Angel's Episcopal Church, the All Angels Guild, Coronet Club, P.E.O, Chapter BW, and the Spearfish Food Pantry. She continued to be on a bowling team until her 80s.
Nancy's life was one of service – to her husband, her children and her community.
Nancy was preceded in death by her husband Tom, her parents, her brothers', Bob and Jack, and her son Bob. She is survived by her sister, Susie Lowry, AZ, her four children, daughter-in-law, eleven grandchildren: Angie Kirk and Gretchen Long, Missouri Valley, IA; Josh Svatos, Yankton, SD; Ryan Svatos, Lake Andes, SD; Danelle Willen, and Jeremy McFall, Rapid City, SD, Alissa McFall, Sacramento, CA, Tommy (Hannah) and Greg Mead, Spearfish, SD, and Terri Tull and Dori Mead, Salt Lake City, UT. She had 16 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on December 16, 2017 at 11:00AM at the Church of All Angels, Spearfish, SD. Inurnment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Artemis House or Church of All Angels Episcopal Church Guild
