Myrtle Alice "Myrt" Voorhees, 78, of Spearfish, SD, passed away quietly March 6, 2012 at Belle Fourche Regional Senior Care, surrounded by her family.
Myrt was born January 18, 1934 at Deadwood, SD to Maurice and Theol (Hanson) Moses. The first six years of her life, her family lived in the homestead cabin near O'Neill Pass. In 1940, her family moved to Spearfish so she could attend school. Myrt attended grades 1 through 6 in the old red schoolhouse. She attended junior and senior grades at the Spearfish High School, graduating in 1952. She was active in Glee Club, Thespians and band.
Myrt married James "Jim" Voorhees August 31, 1952 in Spearfish. They continued to live in Spearfish where she and Jim ran a business on main street for 30 years. She was active in the Spearfish Chamber of Commerce and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She was an avid bridge player, and loved her flowers and exploring the old Black Hills gold mines. She had a special love for dogs and horseback riding.
She is survived by her husband, James; daughters, Autumn Gregory, Spearfish and D'Anna Hitson, Spearfish; son, Marc Voorhees, Spearfish; Granddaughters, Heather Hitson, Boston, MA; Sara Gregory, Spearfish, Grandson, Seth Voorhees, Yankton; mother, Theol, Belle Fourche and brother, Maurice Moses, Spearfish.
Myrt was preceded in death by her son, James "Jimmy"; father, Maurice and step-mother, Lucy Moses.
Visitation will be from 2:00-6:00 P.M. on Friday, March 9, 2012, at the Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM, Saturday, March 10, 2012 at All Angels Episcopal Church, with burial following at Rose Hill Cemetery. A memorial is established to maintain the Quiet Room at Spearfish Regional Hospital.
