Myron H.
Stearns
June 25, 1930 – May 22, 2023
Myron H. Stearns, 92, of Deadwood, died on May 22nd, at Spearfish Canyon Healthcare in Spearfish, SD.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on June 16th, 2023 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish, with Pastor Michael Johnson officiating. Interment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery following the service.
Myron H. Stearns was born in Bowman ND on June 25th, 1930 to Elvis and Florence Stearns and grew up on a ranch in Harding County, SD. He was baptized at the Congregational Church in Spearfish and graduated from Spearfish Senior High in 1948. He joined the United States Armed Forces in 1952 and served in the Korean War until being honorably discharged in 1954. He then served in the Army Reserve until 1960.
He married Janet C. Reinecke on August 4, 1952, in Lead SD. The day after returning from their honeymoon, he was shipped out to Fort Bliss Texas to start his Army training. When Myron returned from Korea in 1954 they made their home in Central City.
In 1952 Myron and Janet along with family members purchased Stearns & Shedd Hardware and this became their livelihood for the next 34 years. He was an expert repairman and received numerous awards from Frigidaire for his outstanding service work. Myron also had a picture framing shop in the store and was a serious supporter of the area artists. He acquired a large western art collection which he proudly displayed at the store and in his home. Besides these occupations, they also purchased the trailer park in Central and expanded it to the city limits. Myron was happiest when he was working.
Myron was active in the Deadwood community. He was a member of the Deadwood Chamber of Commerce, Jaycees, Rotary Club and the Days of 76 Committee. He served on the Days of 76 Board for a number of years and was the Grand Marshal for the Days of 76 one year. Myron was a member of the Western South Dakota Buck-A-Roos.
Myron and Janet began traveling in their motor home in 1978 and their travels took them across the US and Canada and even into Mexico one year. This is something they both enjoyed. After retiring the camper they purchased the "Rodger's Pig Farm" on Hwy 85 in 1986. They built a garage, shop and remodeled the barn into their home. Myron filled his days working on the property, helping his children and friends, trucking and logging with his daughter Julie and her husband Randy Tinnell, construction work, and working in his sister Marilyn Shedd's casino.
Myron lost his loving wife, Janet, in 2014. He continued to live on the farm until 2019 with the help of his daughter Julie Tinnell, his granddaughter Jana Tinnell and great-grandson Bridger Nelson. He then moved to Sandstone Senior Living in Spearfish and enjoyed living there. He became a favorite with the staff because of his quick sense of humor and wit.
He is survived by his children, Ronald Stearns (and Jolene Ring) of Spearfish, Heather (and Cornelius Beukhof) of Starbuck MN; son-in-law Randy Tinnell; grandchildren, Jennie (and Truett Carmichael), John (and Nisi Tinnell), Jana Tinnell, Lindsay Beukhof, and Laurel Beukhof; and great-grandchildren, Jack Tinnell and Bridger Nelson.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife Janet, and daughters Marie Stearns and Julie Tinnell.
