Obituary

Muriel Goetsch, 81, Spearfish, passed away at her home on August 2, 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Muriel was born on May 30, 1933 to George and Magaline (Yantzi) Bednar at Ogalvie, MN. Muriel grew up in various areas of Minnesota and South Dakota. While attending High School in Goodwin, SD, Muriel met her lifelong mate, Roland Goetsch. After marrying in 1952, they made their home in Eastern, SD and later settled in Rapid City in 1955. Muriel worked at various jobs settling in at the Old Home Bakery in the early 60's where she worked for many years delivering fresh bakery bread in the Rapid City area. Muriel talked many times about the wording on the back of her van which read "hit me softly, I'm loaded with fresh Old Home Bread". This resulted with an occasional bump from someone at a stop light. Roland and Muriel were blessed with two children, Marty in 1964 and Nyla in 1971. After the 1972 Rapid City Flood, the family moved to Aberdeen. In 1982, Roland transferred to Pierre, moving back to Aberdeen in 1986. In 1995, Roland and Muriel moved to Spearfish. Muriel was a true care giver and provider. Muriel ran a day care for many years in Aberdeen. With the move to Pierre, Muriel began cooking at various cafes, with her signature Carmel and Cinnamon rolls keeping the customers coming back. After moving back to Aberdeen, Muriel cooked at the K-mart deli and later as an aid at a Aberdeen Nursing Home before retiring. Muriel was the caregiver for her mother and husband until their deaths. As a young girl, Muriel enjoyed riding horses with a short stint as a trick rider in rodeos. She loved dancing, working on the farm, cooking, knitting and ceramics.

Muriel is survived by her son, Martin "Marty" Goetsch and wife Julie, Whitewood; daughter, Nyla Tornow and husband Jeff, Sioux Falls; four grandsons, Dylan, Max, Rocky and Oscar; brother, Irvin Bednar, Spearfish; sisters, Donna Ward and husband Darrell, Belle Fourche and Aryls Bader, Huron, SD; sister-in-law, Ann Teppo, Fruitdale, SD and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by husband Roland, parents, brother and brother-in-law.

Visitation will be at 5-7 P.M. on Sunday, August 10, 2014 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, August 11, 2014 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Spearfish, with burial to follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.
