Obituary

Moxa Laurayne Durgin Worischeck passed peacefully from this world to the next on October 9, 2026 at her home in Hill City, South Dakota.

Moxa was born to Jerry & Gayle Durgin in Sterline Colorado, April 10th, 1965. The little Durgin family moved to Florida, when Jerry landed a position working on the moon landing. Missing home, they decided to move back toward their roots and closer to family and settled down in Rapid City, South Dakota, where Moxa’s little sister was born. Two years later, Debbie and Dede moved in across the street and Debbie became their “other sister.” In 1978, the family gained a new member when Kelly Wilkins moved in, becoming a foster brother. In 1980, Jerry started work for ARCO, moving the family to Butte, Montana, then to Tonopah, Nevada where Moxa graduated from high school in 1983. The family then moved to Wright, Wyoming, and Moxa attended the University of Wyoming where she graduated with honors in 1987. She then took off for Portland, Oregon to attend chiropractic college, from which she graduated in 1992.

Shortly after graduating, Moxa moved to Salt Lake City, Utah to begin her chiropractic practice. There, at the home of a college friend, she met Mike Worisheck. Moxa and Mike connected instantly and were married in 1994 where their wedding song was, “Time After Time.” In 1999, Moxa and Mike were blessed with the birth of their son, Kalel Worisheck. Due to Mike’s work as a civil engineer, they moved several times, first to Washington, followed by Texas, then California. They treasured time with their son and enjoyed watching him excel in martial arts. They moved to Hill City, South Dakota in 2012, to be with Moxa’s parents. Moxa was diagnosed with leukemia in 2013, and God blessed her with her parents’ ability to care for her and her sister ‘s ability to donate bone marrow to help her outlive the disease. Unfortunately, Moxa lost Mike to cardiac arrest in 2014. Over the years, Moxa, her mother and her father continued to raise Kalel and enjoyed supporting him in his athletic and professional careers. Moxa stayed with her father and mother and became their caretaker, in turn. Moxa was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 2025. Although she lost her earthly battle with the evil of cancer, she was a devout Christian who never feared death for she knew she would be headed home to sit at the table with her Savior and loved ones.

Moxa was a Doctor of Chiropractic medicine, but after having Kalel, she chose to be a stay-at-home mom, so she could spend as much time as she could with her son. She was a member of the Hill City Community Lutheran Church, at which she met and made many friends who helped her through the last couple of years of life. Moxa always enjoyed reading and passed her love of fantasy and science fiction on to both her sister and her son. She played the viola and the piano when she was younger but preferred to just listen to Christian music as she was older.

Moxa is preceded in death by her mother, Gayle Durgin, her husband, Michael Worischeck, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins, including her mother’s twin brother Gary Knutson and her father’s twin brother, Max Durgin, and Max’s wife, JoAnne. She is survived by her son, Kalel Worischeck and his girlfriend Christine, her father, Jerry Durgin, her foster brother, Kelly Wilkins, and her sister, Stacey Durgin Smith, as well as Stacey’s children, Jerry (wife, Anna), Cassa, and Mason Ruschmeier, and Jerry’s children, whom Moxa cherished, Rowan, Emberlyn, Whitaker, and Barek.

Moxa’s service will be held at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, at 1020 State Street in Spearfish, South Dakota at 2:00 PM on Friday, October 16th. Visitation will begin 1:00.Burial will take place at Rose Hill Cemetery, 255 Ash Street, Spearfish. There will be a small reception to follow at the church.
