Milton grew up on the "home ranch", nine miles east of Spearfish. He attended the Middle False Bottom School not far from the Mitchell ranch. He would reminisce how they could hear the Ft. Meade Calvary from their home. Milton was a great story teller and his grandchildren loved to hear the stories he shared about his younger years at the ranch and the stories his father told to him. Milton attended high school in Spearfish, graduating in 1948. He furthered his education at SDSU. Milton and his father Elvin, ran a sizable and successful ranch. Milton received the award "Outstanding Young Farmer" in 1959. He was very talented with mechanical design and built much of the farm equipment as needed. In his younger years he was a volunteer for the St. Onge Fire Department and has been a longtime member of the Lawrence County Historical Society. He was married to Jean Fiala for 17 years and they had two children, Len and Le Anna. Milton married Jacke in 1976 and shared over 37 years together. Milton loved restoring his old car, traveling and enjoying vacations in their motor home. Most of all Milton enjoyed spending time at family gatherings with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings and friends.

Milton is survived by his wife, Jacke Mitchell; children, Len (Darcy) Mitchell, Le Anna (Dave) Nielsen, Toby Harley and Roxanne Harley; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two sisters, Cheri Miller and Rev. Bee (Quentin) Neufeld and numerous nieces and nephews.
