Mildred Grace Gadsden, 101 of Spearfish, was welcomed into the Kingdom on Friday, October 20, 2017 joining her Lord and being united with her dear husband, James S. Gadsden, Sr. She was a resident at David M Dorsett Health Care in Spearfish, SD.
She was born in Draper, SD, on the 25th of March, 1916, to Earl and Ruth Esmay. Her family moved to Iowa when she was four, then back to Newell, SD where she graduated from Newell High School, and at 101 was the oldest living alumni.
She married Jim in 1935, and brought into the world three children: Ruth Gadsden Groeneveld of Deadwood, SD; Jimmy (Lora) Gadsden of Yakima, WA; and Tom (Carleen) Gadsden of Omaha, NE. She also leaves seven grandchildren and a dozen great grandchildren, plus numerous nieces and nephews.
The family moved to Spearfish in 1946. A constant role model to her family and friends, her life was led with a strong faith, a positive attitude, and a great sense of humor. She was a master at beautiful flower beds and gardens, sewing and crocheting. Many of her doilies and afghans grace her family's homes.
She was a longtime member of the Spearfish United Methodist Church, where she was active up until the last few years. She was part of the Craft and Quilt Group since the inception of the organization.
With a passion to travel, after retirement they went on many adventures with dear friends, to places like Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, and Alaska. The love of traveling in their RV took them to various parts of the US.
At her request, cremation has taken place, a private family burial was held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish, and a Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
Memorials to honor Mildred can be made to the Spearfish United Methodist Church, specifically the Quilt and Craft Group.
The family wishes to recognize the unending support of Pastor Gordon Higgins, Dr. Forrest Brady, the Dorsett Home, and Hospice.
